Graduate Program

Graduate Program

Three specializations are offered in the combined M.A./Ph.D. program in anthropology: archaeology, sociocultural anthropology, and Integrative Anthropological Sciences (IAS). Further specialization is possible within each of these fields. The department offers a terminal M.A. program in anthropology with a specialization in North American archaeology for students whose career objectives require only a master’s degree. A complete statement of degree requirements and policies is available on the department website at http://www.anth.ucsb.edu/graduate/resources.

Admissions: In addition to fulfilling the departmental admission requirements, applicants must also meet the university requirements for admission described in the chapter “Graduate Education at UCSB.” Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in anthropology or a related field. Applicants will be admitted for the fall quarter only; the application deadline is December 1 for the following academic year.

Except for the terminal M.A. degree program (archaeology specialization only), the department normally admits those applicants whose ultimate degree objective is the Ph.D.. Applicants are admitted to the M.A./Ph.D. program with the expectation that they will meet the requirements for the M.A degree and advance to complete the Ph.D. degree. Students entering the program without an M.A. in anthropology must first satisfactorily complete all the requirements for the M.A. degree in the department's graduate program and then may be invited to work toward the Ph.D. degree. Students with an M.A. degree in anthropology from another institution normally must also take the required coursework, form a contract, pass the comprehensive exams, and prepare a research paper before beginning work on a dissertation.

Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Marine Science (IGP-MS): The Department of Anthropology participates in the program for students with biology backgrounds and interests in marine coastal and environmental policy. www.igpms.ucsb.edu/
