The Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology offers a course of study leading to a Ph.D. with emphases in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, or school psychology. An M.A. in Counseling Psychology is offered en route to completing the Ph.D., but is not offered as a terminal degree. The Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) as a Combined Psychology program. Students are admitted to one of the emphases and receive a common core of training, followed by advanced training in their area of emphasis. The degree awarded is in Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology with the student’s area of emphasis (counseling, clinical, or school) also designated on their transcript.
The doctoral program adheres to a scientist-practitioner training model and provides students with both research and practitioner knowledge and skills. The program’s primary goal is to train students who are interested in academic and research positions; a secondary goal is to prepare psychological service providers who will exercise influence on professional psychology through teaching, research, and leadership. The organizing themes that integrate the identity of the Department are the values of human diversity and individual differences, health and development across the lifespan, and ecological (e.g., family, school, community) influences on human behavior.
The Department also offers a master’s of education (M.Ed.) with an emphasis in school psychology. Students pursuing the M.Ed. are oriented toward service delivery and focus upon the implications of research findings in psychology and education for psychological services in school settings. The school psychologist is pivotal to the provision of comprehensive support services to teachers, students, and parents. Comprehensive support service includes prevention, assessment, and intervention programs for all children in preschool through grade 12. The primary objective is to train school psychologists to enhance the learning and development of students and to assist those who have academic or social-emotional challenges or need special education services. Students receive a Pupil Personnel Services credential with specialization in school psychology. The program is committed to a scientist-practitioner model of training, emphasizing the role of school psychologists as highly qualified practitioners and also as leader/innovators in comprehensive support services to schools. This program of study is approved by the National Association of School Psychologists and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Interviews are scheduled for the most highly qualified applicants who meet admission criteria and have interests well suited to faculty interests.
