Special Subject Area Requirements

In the process of fulfilling the General Education General Subject Areas C through G, students in the College of Letters and Science and the College of Engineering must also complete the appropriate special subject area requirements below.  Not all areas are required for all colleges and degree objectives.  To learn more about the specific areas required for a particular college and degree objective, please see the appropriate college's section under "Colleges and Departments":

 

Writing Requirement
Objective: To study and practice with writing, reading, and critical analysis within specific disciplines. Students will demonstrate abilities by producing written work totaling at least 1800 words that is independent of or in addition to written examinations. Assessment of written work must be a significant consideration in total assessment of student performance in the course.

Six designated General Education courses are required for students in the College of Letters and Science or four for students in the College of Engineering. Students in the College of Letters and Science may, by petition, request that up to two other UCSB courses be considered as applicable toward this requirement. Special instructions for such petitions are available from the college office. Once a student has matriculated at UCSB, the writing requirement may be met only with designated UCSB courses.

European Traditions Requirement
(For students pursuing a B.A. degree in the College of Letters and Science.  Students in the College of Engineering must take one course from either the European Traditions or World Cultures requirement.)

Objective: To learn to analyze early and/or modern European cultures and their significance in world affairs.
One course is required.

World Cultures Requirement
(College of Letters and Science only. Students in the College of Engineering must take one course from either the World Cultures or European Traditions requirement.)

Objective: To learn to identify, understand, and appreciate the history, thought, and practices of one or more culture outside of the European tradition.
One course is required.

Quantitative Relationships Requirement
(College of Letters and Science only)

Objective: To develop and apply basic quantitative methods to relevant questions or areas of study.
One course is required.

Ethnicity Requirement
Objective: To learn to identify and understand the philosophical, intellectual, historical, and/or cultural experiences of HISTORICALLY oppressed and excluded racial minorities in the United States.
One course is required.
