Counseling and Psychological Services

Whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student, a non-traditional or international student, university life can at times be stressful or overwhelming. When you need help sorting out a personal issue, or feel overly stressed, anxious or depressed, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) can provide an objective perspective and support. During individual sessions, our psychologists can help you clarify your values and goals, as well as identify options available to you, particularly if these issues are interfering with your academic life and/or causing difficulty in other areas. Counseling can also help you build self-confidence, especially in your relationships with others. CAPS offers group therapy which provides a safe environment in which you can experiment with new behaviors, improve communication skills, and receive feedback from other students with similar concerns and interests. Please note that all your meetings in CAPS are confidential.

Counseling and Psychological Services has Mental Health Peers trained in a wide variety of stress management techniques who can help you learn to better cope with the stresses of university life. Services include: brief drop-in peer-to-peer counseling sessions; a School Anxiety Program (SAP) that includes one workshop and individualized follow-up sessions; workshops on stress management and relaxation; 4 massage chairs; and the famous “Egg Chair” for relaxation and stress management. All services are covered by your registration fee and free of charge at the door!
We look forward to helping you as you navigate your way through UCSB! Please stop by the CAPS office in Building 599, visit our website at caps.sa.ucsb.edu, or call (805) 893-4411 for more information. CAPS is open Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, excluding University Holidays. Services are paid for by your registration fees so there is no additional cost. If you need phone consultation after business hours or on weekends, please call (805) 893-4411. CAPS has psychologists available in several locations: the Student Resource Building (SRB), Gaucho Support Center (GSC) in Isla Vista, and the San Clemente and Santa Catalina residence halls. We are here to help you reach your goals.
