Student Health

Student Health is a fully accredited multi-specialty healthcare center located on campus to provide convenient access to many medical, pharmacy, eye & dental care services to enable students to have a healthy and successful University experience. Some services are available at no cost (advice nurses, social workers, and alcohol & drug counselors), while other care is covered by Gaucho Health Insurance (GHI), or available for a fee for students who have waived GHI.

To make an appointment or obtain urgent care services, students may either drop-in, call the Appointment Desk at (805) 893-3371, or login to the Gateway on the Student Health website. For specific information regarding fees, call (805) 893-8141. Student who have health questions, or need help scheduling an appointment, should call (805) 893-3371. A 24/7 Nurseline is available at (800) 539-1387.

  1. Starting Fall 2016, all incoming students are required to complete the vaccinations and tuberculosis screening noted in the University of California Immunization Requirements. Failure to comply may result in a registration hold. It is strongly urged that students update their immunizations before arriving at UCSB. Incoming students must complete this requirement by following the instructions on the Student Health University Immunization Requirements webpage. Students will need to enter dates of the required immunizations and tuberculosis screening as well as upload their immunization records.
  2. Tuberculosis tests (either blood test or skin test) within the prior 12 months are required for those who have a positive screening questionnaire (see above), and also for any graduate student admitted to the UCSB teaching credential program. TB tests may be obtained at Student Health for a fee for students that do not have Gaucho Health Insurance (GHI), and are free to student who are insured by GHI.
  3. Pre-participation Athletic Physicals are required for all intercollegiate athletes, and must be completed at Student Health. These will be arranged by the Intercollegiate Athletics Department.

Medical Services For Enrolled Students

Student Health regular hours are 8:00am – 4:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 9:00am – 4:30pm on Wednesdays, and 4:30pm – 7:00pm on Thursdays by appointment only. We are located across from the Events Center, at the edge of Isla Vista, making it easy to access healthcare on campus. We have our own parking lot with plenty of student parking (C sticker required) as well as metered parking available.

We offer full-service primary care as well as specialty care. The following are some of our services available: Dermatology, eye and dental care, gynecology (including annual exams), health counseling (alcohol & drugs, nutrition, stress management, eating disorders, and sexual health), HIV & STI testing, immunizations, internal medicine, laboratory, minor surgery, orthopedics, pharmacy, physical therapy, psychiatry, same-day appointments, social work, travel medicine, urgent care, wart removal, and x-ray. Injuries or illnesses which cannot be handled by Student Health will be referred to local specialty physicians and hospitals. To make an appointment, please call (805) 893-3371 or see more information on the Student Health website.

In the event of an emergency, students should go directly to one of the local community hospitals. After Hours Care information is available on the Student Health website. Students should expect to use their medical insurance to cover expenses. All costs incurred will be at the student’s expense if they do not have GHI; therefore, students need to have adequate health insurance coverage. For information on university-sponsored health insurance, call the Student Health Insurance Office at (805) 893-2592. Students who need emergency medical care, call 911 or 9-911.

Required Health Insurance

All registered UCSB students are required to have health insurance that meets minimum coverage limits established by the University of California. It is a condition of enrollment AND a non-academic requirement of registration.

UCSB students are automatically enrolled in Gaucho Health Insurance (GHI) which includes vision and dental coverage, and access to many Student Health services with no additional charges. Financial Aid awards may include a GHI Grant to cover the GHI premium for eligible students. The insurance premium will automatically be included in the quarterly BARC bill. For information about this comprehensive plan, visit the Student Health Insurance webpage.

Students who have adequate private insurance, and do not wish to enroll in GHI, may submit a request for an insurance waiver and receive confirmation that waiver was successfully granted. Failure to act will result in automatic enrollment in GHI. Students will need to have their private insurance plan information available when submitting the waiver request. Please note that a Financial Aid award may change if a student waives out of GHI. For more information, please review the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship’s Policy Information webpage.
