The following programs are available: M.A. in Statistics—Mathematical Statistics Specialization, or
Applied Statistics Specialization; Ph.D. in Statistics and Applied Probability; and the Ph.D. in Statistics
and Applied Probability with an Emphasis in Financial Mathematics and Statistics. Also available are
two optional interdisciplinary Ph.D. emphases (Bioengineering and Quantitative Methods in the Social
Sciences). Specializations are not listed on a student’s transcript or diploma; however, emphases are
listed on the transcript.
In addition to departmental requirements, candidates for graduate degrees must meet the university
degree requirements described in the Graduate Education section of this catalog.
Data Science Consulting Laboratory
The Data Science Consulting Laboratory - DataLab - provides advice on statistical and machine learning methods to researchers (faculty and graduate students) at UCSB. Advice can be given at all stages of an investigation — planning the data collection, choosing the appropriate statistical methods for valid interpretation of results, choosing effective software for calculation and graphical display and figuring out how to do the numerical work on a computer and reporting the final statistical results. Please go to datascience.ucsb.edu/consulting to request a consultation
Admission
In addition to departmental
admission requirements, applicants must also meet the university
