Special Subject Area Requirements

In the process of fulfilling the General Education General Subject Areas C through H, students in the College of Letters and Science and the College of Engineering must also complete the appropriate special subject area requirements below.  Not all areas are required for all colleges and degree objectives.  To learn more about the specific areas required for a particular college and degree objective, please see the appropriate college's section under "Colleges and Departments":

Writing Requirement
A minimum of six (for students in the College of Letters and Science) or four (for students in the College of Engineering) designated General Education courses that meet the following criteria:

  1. the courses require one to three papers totaling at least 1,800 words, exclusive of elements like footnotes, equations, tables of contents, or references;
  2. the required papers are independent of or in addition to written examinations; and
  3. the paper(s) are a significant consideration in the assessment of student performance in the course.

Students may, by petition, request that up to two other UCSB courses be considered as applicable toward this requirement. Special instructions for such petitions are available from the college office. Once a student has matriculated at UCSB, the writing requirement may be met only with designated UCSB courses.

European Traditions Requirement
(required only for the B.A. degree for students in the College of Letters and Science, and for all undergraduates in the College of Engineering)

At least one course that focuses on European cultures or cultures in the European tradition.

World Cultures Requirement
(College of Letters and Science only)

At least one course that focuses on a world culture outside of the European tradition.

Quantitative Relationships Requirement
(College of Letters and Science only)

At least one course from Area C emphasizing quantitative relationships.

Ethnicity Requirement
At least one course which concentrates on the intellectual, social and cultural experience, and the history of one of the following: Native Americans, African Americans, Chicanos/Latinos, Asian Americans, or a course that provides a comparative and integrative context for understanding the experiences of oppressed and excluded racial minorities in the United States.

Depth Requirement
(College of Engineering only)
Choose one of the following options:
Option 1: At least two upper-division courses from two separate departments, in each of which a course has already been completed. All courses used towards this requirement must also fulfill areas D, E, F, G, or H.
Option 2: Complete a three-course sequence from the list of approved sequences available from the college.
