Graduation

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students are responsible for reviewing their records carefully on a regular basis to ensure that they are on track for completing all degree requirements. To assist in preparing for graduation, students should review the following records located in the Major & GE Progress Checks link under the Progress tab within GOLD.

Major Progress Check: An evaluation of how completed courses and exams apply towards satisfaction of all University, College (including general education), and major requirements.

A final degree evaluation check is performed by the Office of the Registrar when an undergraduate student declares candidacy for graduation. Degree requirements and course work must be completed by the official ending date of the UCSB quarter for the declared candidacy quarter. For transfer work to be applied to a student's record, official transcripts must be received before the degree is awarded. Transcripts received after the degree is awarded will not be evaluated and credit will not be awarded.

As the final degree evaluation is a final review of the student record, it occurs too late to be of assistance in deciding which courses to take during the last quarter. Students are urged to meet with general advisors in their colleges well before their last quarter for assistance in reviewing whether they have met General Education and degree requirements.  Students in the College of Creative Studies are required to consult with their assigned advisors on a quarterly basis to monitor progress, both in the major and toward graduation. For assistance in reviewing major requirements, students should consult their major department advisor and consult their sponsoring minor department if pursuing a minor.

Graduate Students

Graduate students must communicate their intent to graduate with their academic department in order to begin the process of a final degree check. This process is finalized by the Graduate Division. A graduate degree cannot be awarded until the student has fulfilled all relevant University and departmental degree requirements, as determined by degree checks conducted by the student’s academic department and the Graduate Division. The degree candidate is responsible for correcting any deficiencies found during a final degree check.
