Counseling and Psychological Services

Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) is committed to providing timely, culturally appropriate, and effective mental health services to our diverse UCSB student body, as well as professional consultation to faculty, staff, and families. Therapy or other therapeutic interventions offered through CAPS can help build self-confidence, especially in relationships with others. CAPS offers drop-in workshops and group therapy which provide a safe environment in which students can experiment with new behaviors, improve communication skills, and receive feedback from other students with similar concerns and interests. Please note that all meetings in CAPS are confidential.

Counseling and Psychological Services also has Mental Health Peers who are trained in a wide variety of stress management techniques that often help students learn to better cope with the stresses of university life. Services include: brief drop-in peer-to-peer counseling sessions; a School Anxiety Program (SAP) that includes one workshop and individualized follow-up sessions; workshops on stress management and relaxation; four massage chairs; and the famous “Egg Chair” for relaxation and stress management. All services are covered by registration fees and are free of charge.

Please visit our website at caps.sa.ucsb.edu or call (805) 893-4411 for more information. CAPS provides telemental health as well as in-person services and is located in Building 599 and is open Monday-Friday excluding University Holidays (caps.sa.ucsb.edu/about-us/contact-us-hours-location). Services are paid for by registration fees so there is no additional cost. Students who need phone consultation after business hours or on weekends may call (805) 893-4411 to speak with a mental health professional who will guide them to the next best step for their particular issue. CAPS has clinicians available in several locations: the Student Resource Building (SRB), Gaucho Support Center (GSC) in Isla Vista, and the San Clemente and Santa Catalina residence halls. CAPS is here to help students reach their goals.
