Undergraduate Program

Minor—Professional Writing (Requirements - PDF)

As described in the “Overview” section, the great breadth of lower-division and upper-division courses offered by the Writing Program prepares incoming students for success in their University course work, enhances the writing, research, and analytical-thinking abilities needed for students’ work in courses for their major, and enriches students’ ability to use writing effectively in their professional, civic, and personal lives after college.

The Writing Program also offers, for highly-qualified students, a Professional Writing Minor, open to students by competitive application during the senior year. Interested candidates should consult the Writing Program website for details about prerequisites, submission procedures, and deadlines.

Professional Writing minors expand their abilities to communicate in diverse contexts in two capstone courses and an internship during their senior year. The minor features three tracks:

Professional Editing focuses on conceptual and technical editing of a wide range of documents for diverse audiences.

Multimedia Communication focuses on evaluation, design, and production of effective multimedia content for professional audiences.

Business Communication focuses on the development of written, visual, oral, and collaborative skills for the workplace.
