Greetings, and welcome to the 2018-19 General Catalog for UC Santa
Barbara. This catalog is a wonderful resource for our entire campus
community, and I encourage you to refer to it often. I hope you will
find it to be a helpful roadmap as you explore the broad array of
courses, programs, activities, and services available to you on our
campus.
We have a tradition here at UC Santa Barbara of emphasizing both our
undergraduate and graduate programs, and a balance of academic and
extracurricular campus life. We work collaboratively to foster a
friendly and supportive environment in which students, staff, and
faculty from richly diverse backgrounds and perspectives can explore and
learn together.
This is an extraordinary place. We are one of only 62 institutions elected to the prestigious Association of American Universities, and the first AAU member to be designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. We are ranked No. 8 among the top public universities in the country; No. 9 worldwide for producing Nobel laureates in this century; and No. 2 among the nation’s top colleges most committed to economic diversity. These accolades highlight our strong commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and inclusion, as well as accessibility and affordability.
We are proud of our campus, and we are proud of you! You are valued members of our community of scholars and of our UC Santa Barbara family. As you continue on your journey of intellectual discovery, please remember that we are here to support and encourage you every step of the way.
Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
