UC Santa Barbara typically accepts transfer students at the junior level only. To prepare for entrance as a junior, students are encouraged to identify their intended major as early as possible and take prerequisite courses for their major. All transfer applicants must complete these requirements:

  1. Complete 60 semester or 90 quarter units of transferable college credit with a grade point average of at least 2.4 for California residents and at least 2.8 for nonresidents (no more than 14 semester or 21 quarter units may be taken Pass/Not Pass).
  2. Complete the following seven-course pattern requirement, earning a grade of C or better in each:
    • Two transferable courses in English composition.
    • One transferable course in mathematics beyond intermediate algebra, such as college algebra, precalculus, or statistics.
    • Four transferable courses from among at least two of the following areas: arts and humanities, behavioral and social sciences, biological and physical sciences.

California community college students can take advantage of UCSB's Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) by completing specific course requirements with a specific GPA and meeting deadlines. The TAG does not apply to majors in the College of Creative Studies, College of Engineering, or to Dance, Music and Theater majors in the College of Letters and Science. To explore UCSB's TAG guarantee, please visit http://admissions.sa.ucsb.edu/applying/transfer/tag.

If you were eligible for admission to the University when you graduated from high school – meaning you satisfied the Subject, Scholarship, and Examination Requirements, or were identified by the University during your senior year as Eligible in the Local Context – you are eligible for transfer if you have a C (2.0) average in your transferable college coursework. If you met the Scholarship Requirement in high school but did not satisfy the Subject Requirement, you must take transferable college courses in the missing subjects, earn a C or better in each required course, and have an overall C (2.0) average in all transferable coursework to be eligible to transfer. However, the University typically has selection criteria set far above this minimum standard.
